Campiña Sur de Córdoba: This area is located within the triangle formed by Lucena, Puente Genil, and Aguilar de la Frontera. Two Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs), Lucena and Estepa, are represented in this area. The predominant olive variety is Hojiblanca.
Subbética: Located in the Sierra Sur de Córdoba and the eastern part of the province, this area is particularly known for the towns of Baena and Priego de Córdoba, both of which have their own Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The main olive varieties grown in this area are Picual, Picudo, and Hojiblanca.
Sierra Morena: The municipalities of Montoro, Adamuz, and Hornachuelos are particularly notable for their olive oil production. The main olive varieties grown in this area are Picual, Picudo, and Nevadillo Negro. The area is home to the Montoro-Adamuz Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Olive Varieties in the Province of Córdoba
The main olive varieties grown in the province of Córdoba include:
- Hojiblanca, mainly grown in the Campiña Sur area.
- Picual, grown throughout the province, particularly in areas bordering the province of Jaén.
- Picudo, a traditional Andalusian olive variety mainly grown in the Subbética and Sierra Morena areas.
- Nevadillo Negro, mainly grown in the Sierra Morena area.
Although it is not native to Córdoba, the Arbequina variety is also increasingly being planted in olive groves throughout the province.
